Motorola, Shanda collaborate on gaming handset for China

Handset and online gaming giants come together for co-branded project

Handset manufacturer Motorola and leading Chinese online games firm Shanda are in talks aimed at launching a co-branded handset in the Chinese market designed specifically for gaming, according to news reports.

Interfax China reports that negotiations between the two firms are currently in progress, with an official announcement of the project expected to follow shortly.

Motorola will create the new handsets, while Shanda will provide content for them - most likely developed by Digital Red Mobile Software, the Beijing-based mobile game development firm which it acquired early in 2004.

Much of Shanda's business is currently focused on massively multiplayer online games, and it's likely that this new device will be used to promote the concept of transmedial access - allowing players to interact with the MMOG world even when away from their PCs.
