Modern Warfare 2 tops key market sellers

Activision shooter sells almost 12 million in 2009, topping Nintendo-dominated list

Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 sold 11.86 million units across the three key global markets of the US, UK and Japan in 2009 - making it the biggest seller in those regions.

It headed a top five that was otherwise made up exclusively of Nintendo first party titles created for the Wii platform.

Modern Warfare's biggest numbers came unsurprisingly from the US, where it shifted 8.82 million units, according to the NPD Group, GfK Chart-Track and Enterbrain - compared to 2.8 million in the UK and 238,000 in Japan.

Wii Sports Resort was second on the list, with total unit sales of 7.57 million (4.54 million in the US, 1.49 million in the UK and 1.54 million in Japan), with New Super Mario Bros Wii in third on 7.41 million (4.23 million / 687,000 / 2.49 million).

Wii Fit Plus pipped its predecessor to fourth, selling 5.8 million units globally (3.53 million / 968,000 / 1.3 million) with the original game weighing in at 5.44 million (3.6 million / 1.25 million / 588,000).
