Mobile gaming 'not quite there', says Sony Ericsson
O2 also cautious as EA exec highlights importance of demographics
Sony Ericsson president Miles Flint has said that there are still a series of hurdles to be overcome for mobile gaming, particularly with regard to the multiplayer experience.
As reported by News.com, Flint said there are still issues with screen size, battery life, functionality and available services, observing, " There is a constant set of trade offs."
He added, "We haven't yet seen that gaming is quite there in terms of performance."
According to Flint, there are also difficulties with visuals and network speeds when it comes to multiplayer gaming. "You need to have the network latency issue fixed so you can create a compelling consumer experience - it is definitely there in our thinking."
O2 Europe boss Peter Erskine said his company had yet to see impressive profits from mobile gaming. "We have had flirtations with games, but the revenue was always deeply niche," he observed.
But Gerhard Florin, international publishing boss at Electronic Arts, said mobile games could have the edge over traditional PC and console titles with regard to attracting a wider audience.
"If new consumers come in, they might not react to new hardware in the same way as the core gamers who go for bits and bytes and have to have the latest processor power," he said.
