The Innovation Award for Consumer Goods was one of a number of accolades handed out at the event held at the Science Museum in London last night.
A statement read: "He is the inventor of Nintendo and has been one of the key architects in the electronic gaming industry."
Nintendo was in fact founded by the Yamauchi family, although Miyamoto has overseen the company's modern-day renaissance.
The latest videogame platforms, the DS and Wii, have consistently outsold its Microsoft and Sony counterparts around the world over the past year, and have proven so popular that Nintendo is now ranked as one of the very top companies in Japan by stock value.
