Miyamoto to work on smaller projects at Nintendo
But company denies he is to step down from current role
Game creator Shigeru Miyamoto has said that he wants to work on smaller game projects, and will step down from his current role at the company.
Speaking to Wired, the creator of Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda said he wants to work with a younger generation of game designers
"Inside our office, I've been recently declaring, 'I'm going to retire, I'm going to retire,'" offered Miyamoto. "I'm not saying that I'm going to retire from game development altogether. What I mean by retiring is, retiring from my current position."
"What I really want to do is be in the forefront of game development once again myself. Probably working on a smaller project with even younger developers. Or I might be interested in making something that I can make myself, by myself. Something really small."
However, Nintendo has denied that Miyamoto will leave his current position to Reuters, stating that he just intends to help train a new generation of creators.
Shares in Nintendo fell 2 per cent on Thursday, more than the drop of 0.2 per cent Nikkei average.
"This is absolutely not true," said Nintendo. "There seems to have been a misunderstanding. He has said all along that he wants to train the younger generation.
"He has no intention of stepping down."
