Miyamoto reacts to Iwata's untimely death
Creator of Mario and Zelda has issued a brief statement via the Wall Street Journal
The incredibly sad passing of Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata not only took us by surprise but it seemed to catch Nintendo off guard too. Industry legend Shigeru Miyamoto, one of the two top remaining executives at Nintendo along with senior managing director Genyo Takeda, commented to the Wall Street Journal in Japan, "I am surprised at this sudden news and overcome with sadness."
The Wall Street Journal's headline speculates that Miyamoto is seen as a possible successor at Nintendo, but the company has said it has no plans for a replacement for Iwata and that Miyamoto and Takeda would continue in their positions. Regardless, now is not the time to speculate on Nintendo's future but instead to reflect on the enormous impact Iwata had on Nintendo and the industry.
For its part, Nintendo is officially engaging in a moment of silence on its social media channels, and the company has also lowered its flags to half staff at corporate headquarters in Japan.
