Midway to use Unreal Engine 3 for next-gen titles

Publisher Midway has announced that it is to extend its relationship with developer Epic Games by licensing the Unreal Engine 3 technology as the basis for its next generation console development plans.

The firm has already rolled out the impressive engine technology across all of its internal development studios, including the recently acquired Surreal Software (creators of The Suffering) and Midway Austin (working on Area 51) locations.

Midway is already working with Epic on publishing future titles in the hugely successful PC franchise Unreal, after the developer parted ways with long-time publishing partner Atari last year.

"Great next-generation games will be defined by how far they push the envelope in terms of graphical prowess, evolved artificial intelligence, and revolutionary online functionality beyond what gamers are currently experiencing," commented Midway CEO David Zucker.

"Our obtaining the use of Unreal Engine 3 empowers us to begin today to produce great next-generation content," he continued. "Our internal studios are already in the process of creating incredible products with the Unreal Engine 3 technology in multiple genres."

No specific titles have been announced by Midway as yet, but the firm's Unreal Engine 3 games will join a roster of next-generation software based on the engine which includes titles from Knights of the Old Republic and Jade Empire developer Bioware and, of course, from Epic Games itself.
