Microsoft will add direct game sales to Mixer in 2018

The streaming service will also add on-platform tipping this year

Microsoft will introduce new monetisation options to Mixer this year, with both direct sales and tipping being prepared to launch on the streaming platform in 2018.

Mixer Direct Purchase will allow viewers to purchase digital copies of games and DLC that they see a streamer playing. The streamer will then receive an unspecified percentage of that purchase.

The new program is currently being tested, and it will apply to all games on Microsoft's digital store at first - that covers more than 5,000 products across Xbox and Windows 10, and Microsoft expects that number to grow in time.

The other feature being added to Mixer is tipping, which is already possible using third-party, off-platform services. Microsoft will implement direct tipping at some point this year, with more information promised in, "the coming weeks and months."

These features will bring Mixer in line with its biggest rival, Twitch, which introduced direct sales in February 2017. Microsoft's Beam service rebranded as Mixer three months later.

According to an official blog post, Mixer exceeded 10 million MAUs in 2017.
