Microsoft set to launch mobile functions for Xbox 360
Next-generation console to gain mobile phone messaging link
Expanding the much touted connectivity of its recently launched Xbox 360 games console, Microsoft has announced plans to implement a new function, allowing gamers to send instant messages to mobile handsets.
In an interview with the BBC News website, Microsoft UK mobility business manager, Jason Langridge, suggested that the new service is close to completion and could launch within the next six months, enabling gamers to contact friends and family with instant messages, using the enhanced connectivity capabilities of the Xbox 360.
"On my device I sign in with my MSN account and it sets up Hotmail. There is no service fee and you can do MSN messaging chats," Langridge stated.
The messages, informing friends and fellow gamers when a favourite game is being played and inviting them to join in via the Xbox Live service, would be transmitted and received on the mobile phone as a standard instant message.
"It just pops up saying 'Dinky Dave wants to play Project Gotham Racing' with you," Langridge added. "You can see the integration that we are building with the Xbox 360, with phones and with PCs."
The latest addition forms part of Microsoft's ongoing ambition to synchronise and share information through various devices, including PCs, consoles and, increasingly, mobile devices. The marketing focus of the Xbox 360 centred heavily on community features, connected gaming and the hugely successful Xbox Live service, which has been completely overhauled and enhanced for the new machine.
The new project further emphasises Microsoft's commitment to a centralised and connected multi-media experience, pushing the boundaries of online and mobile connectivity, in line with the company's recently announced Windows Live service. The Xbox 360 is central to Microsoft's future ambitions, and already includes compatibility with a range of multi-media devices such as Apple's iPod, Sony's PSP and various other third party devices.
