Microsoft promises to ease mobile content delivery
PlayReady technology aimed at multiple business models and content
Microsoft is pledging to help mobile content providers ease the burden of incorporating payment methods and fragmented technology into their products.
The PlayReady technology is designed for a broad range of business models such as rental, subscription, pay-per-view and super-distribution, and is being aimed at multiple mobile content including games, video, ringtones, music and images.
"Our wireless partners worldwide asked for a single system to power a growing array of business models and consumer scenarios," commented Amir Majidimehr, corporate VP of consumer media technology at Microsoft.
"With consumer demand for digital goods of all types growing exponentially, this technology delivers a foundation for the future and accelerates the transparent delivery of rich content to consumers," he said.
Microsoft is working with software developer PacketVideo on the PlayReady technology, with mobile companies such as Telefonica, O2, Verizon Wireless, Bouygues Telecom and Cingular Wireless all planning to use the system.
PlayReady technology will be available in the first half of 2007 for handset and device implementation.
