Miami Vice goes mobile with Player X

Major summer action flick heads to handsets

Mobile content firm Player X has signed a deal with Universal Studios to bring a game based on Miami Vice, the forthcoming movie based on the classic TV series, to mobile phones this summer.

The move is the latest in a string of major licensing deals for Player X - coming in the wake of the firm's signing of the Wallace and Gromit movie and a deal with British publisher Codemasters, among others.

Miami Vice, which is one of Universal Pictures' biggest hopes for the summer market, stars Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx as lead characters James 'Sonny' Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs, and will be launched at the end of July.

"Player X is the new cool kid on the block in the world of mobile publishing," according to Universal Mobile Entertainment senior VP Jeremy Laws. "They've totally embraced Miami Vice from our first discussion about it, and that passion has translated into a fantastic mobile game that's a blast to play."

British-based Player X has a distribution network of more than 70 operators across Europe, Asia and North America, and claims that this gives the Miami Vice title a potential global reach of over 450 million people.

"Player X's mobile expertise will augment the Miami Vice brand and take the movie content to mobile phone users all over the world," enthused Player X boss Tony Pearce in a statement today.
