Max Payne beats Diablo III to UK No.1

Rockstar scores a franchise first, while Diablo III enters at 2

Rockstar's Max Payne 3 shot to the top of the UK software charts this week, beating back the hellish forces of Diablo III, which took second place.

The number one debut was a first for the Max Payne franchise, with 58 per cent of sales for the Xbox 360 and 42 per cent for PlayStation 3. It was the biggest all formats top seller since Mass Effect 3.

Diablo III was a PC only release, and it's important to note that this chart does not take into account digital sales, which would be expected to be considerable for this release. It was only 8,000 sales behind Max Payne 3.

The new entries pushed FIFA Street into third, while last week's number one, Sniper Elite V2, fell to fourth.

The rest of the chart held few surprises, apart from a surprise re-entry from Catherine at 17, and Rayman Origins sneaking back in at 20.
