Birmingham-based developer Swordfish Studios has announced that it is moving into significantly larger office premises and is seeking to hire further staff, marking a major expansion at a time when many UK studios are facing difficulties.

The company is moving from its previous 3,500 square foot premises up into a 6,000 square foot premises in the same building, and is currently seeking a further eight members of staff to join its existing teams.

Swordfish is working on a range of projects including World Championship Rugby for Acclaim, which is due to launch next week on PS2 and Xbox (with a PC version arriving later), Cold War for Vivendi (due to launch in the final quarter of this year) and another as-yet unannounced title.

The company's expansion comes at a time when many developers - particularly those in the north and the midlands - are facing difficulties, with a large number of studios shutting down over the past year, and many others laying off staff.

However, despite the undoubtedly hostile market conditions, several UK studios ââ'¬â such as Swordfish - continue to thrive, and many are hopeful that an early technological edge in terms of next-gen console development will give UK developers a leading position in the world market once again.
