Lich King retakes US PC chart lead

World of Warcraft expansion relegates Empire: Total War to second place

Blizzard's mega-MMO World of Warcraft has seen its latest expansion, Wrath of the Lich King - which was released in November last year - climb back to the top of the US PC sales chart as the release spike for Empire: Total War fell away.

That's according to the latest data from NPD covering the week ending March 28, which also revealed that the average sales price for the title was USD 33 compared to Empire's USD 46.

The Sims 2: Double Deluxe continued its seemingly endless run in the chart in third, the first of two Sims 2 titles, while the World of Warcraft Battle Chest took fourth place.

The two most expensive games in the top ten, at USD 47 on average apiece, were next - Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II was followed by Spore.

Mystery Case Files: Return to Ravenhearst took seventh, with the original World of Warcraft game still selling in eighth, while The Sims 2: Apartment Life and Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway rounded out the top ten list.

Activision Blizzard therefore took four of the slots, with EA grabbing three and Sega, THQ and Ubisoft bagging one each.

The full top ten is as follows:

  • 1. World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King
  • 2. Empire: Total War
  • 3. The Sims 2: Double Deluxe
  • 4. World of Warcraft: Battle Chest
  • 5. Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II
  • 6. Spore
