King Kong claims UK mobile top spot
Movie tie-in topples Tetris in December
Continuing the success achieved in the traditional videogames sector, King Kong has topped the UK mobile games download chart in December, knocking classic puzzle game Tetris into second place.
The official game of the movie, which took the videogames industry by storm in December and narrowly missed achieving the coveted Christmas number one spot, is the latest success for international mobile games publisher and developer Gameloft. The company also enjoyed a further two top ten listings in December with Block Breaker Deluxe in third place and New York Nights (Success in the City) in fifth position.
Namco held onto fourth place for another month with retro classic Pac-Man, whilst I-Play's 3D Pool and 3D Pool Urban Hustle claimed seventh and tenth place respectively.
The continued convergence between the traditional videogames market and the burgeoning mobile sector shows a noticeable impact on the download chart once again, with mobile versions of hit PC and console titles making up the rest of the top ten in December and displacing a number of traditional parlour and casual games that have previously dominated the sector.
EA, its mobile division currently completing an acquisition of leading mobile firm Jamdat, extends its presence in the mobile space with The Sims 2 in sixth position and maintains a top ten listing with EA Sports Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2005 (published by I-Play) in ninth place. Finally, MFORMA takes eighth place with the dedicated mobile version of its acclaimed console title, Call of Duty 2.
