Kindle Fire sells 1m units for third consecutive week

Amazon's tablet device the most successful product in the company's history

Amazon's Kindle Fire tablet has sold "well over" 1 million units per week for the last three weeks.

Amazon has not revealed the total sales of the device, but this figure confirms the Kindle Fire as the most credible competitor to Apple's dominant iPad in the burgeoning tablet market.

"Kindle Fire is the most successful product we've ever launched," said Amazon Kindle vice president Dave Limp in a statement.

"Kindle Fire it's the bestselling product across all of Amazon for 11 straight weeks, we've already sold millions of units, and we're building millions more to meet the high demand."

"In fact, demand is accelerating - Kindle Fire sales increased week over week for each of the past three weeks."

The popularity of the Kindle Fire was apparent even before its release, with pre-orders reaching such levels that Amazon was forced to increase the rate of production.

Zynga, PopCap, Rovio and EA all had games ready for the device's November launch, and Amazon has pledged to add apps and games to its online store "every day".
