Intel Extreme Masters
Heads to Ukraine in January for the European Championship finals.
Cologne, November 19, 2010 – Intel Extreme Masters V, the global league of the video game champions, comes to Ukraine for the finals of its European Championship tournament. The competition will be held on January 20 – 23 at the Kiev Cyber Sport Arena and will include the disciplines of Quake Live, Counter-Strike1.6 and Starcraft 2. Apart from the title, the best professional gamers of the old continent will fight for their share of 114,000 US Dollar and the right to compete in the Intel Extreme Masters World Championship held at CeBIT 2011 in Hanover, Germany.
Intel Extreme Masters is the most prominent international league in competitive gaming. The world’s best gamers compete for the World Championship title and their share of 400,000 US Dollar – the highest prize purse in an international eSports tournament. After a regular season played online the twelve best contenders in Quake Live, Counter-Strike 1.6 and Starcraft 2, respectively, will fight in Kiev to determine the European Champion, who will represent their continent at the World Championship in March 2011.
Following the events in Shanghai, Cologne and New York, as well as the Asian Championship competition online, the tournament in Ukraine will be the fourth live stop of the fifth season of the eSports league. After that, the world’s best players will meet in Hanover, Germany, to determine the Intel Extreme Masters World Champion.
“The Kiev Cyber Sport Arena is the best eSports-ready venue in Europe, perfect for both spectators and for professional gamers,” says Michal Blicharz, the Intel Extreme Masters Project Manager at Turtle Entertainment. “I think it is very exciting that for the first time since 2007 Intel Extreme Masters has a presence in Eastern Europe,” he adds.
The European Championship regular season is in full swing at the moment. 234 players in all three disciplines are still competing for the right to participate in the live finals in Kiev. Among the contenders are such names as Carl Stefan “MorroW” Andersson in Starcraft 2 or team SK Gaming in Counter-Strike 1.6. Kiev Cyber Sport Arena is considered to be one of the most advanced eSports venues in Europe.
