I-Play scoops 2006 GSMA Mobile award

Skipping Stone voted Best Made for Mobile Game

The GSM Association has revealed the winners of the 2006 GSMA Mobile Awards, which were presented at a ceremony at the National Palace in Barcelona as part of the GSM World Congress event.

The eleventh annual GSM awards included a number of category changes and the introduction of the Mobile Innovation Award, all of which is designed to reflect the rapid growth and continual change in the mobile sector.

Mobile games provider I-Play picked up the Best Made for Mobile award for its innovative 'one-thumb gaming' title, Skipping Stone. The game, created by Korea-based Gamevil, challenges players to throw and continually 'skip' a stone across the water, using nothing more than the number 5 key and an acute sense of timing to bounce the stone on the correct spot and rack up the highest number of skips or the longest distance travelled.

The game received a significant amount of critical acclaim upon its release in Korea, and its success was mirrored in other world territories - Skipping Stone also won the Best Mobile Game award at the Mobile Choice Consumer Awards in London last October.

In other categories, Cognima's ShoZu picked up the award for Best Mobile Messaging Service, Nokia's N70 handset was beaten to the post for Best 3GSM Handset or Device by Motorola's RAZR V3x, Spinvox bagged the Mobile Innovation award for its voicemail-to-text solution, and MTN Nigeria Communications' Rural Telephone Project was awarded Best Mobile Community Service or Initiative.
