GTA: Chinatown Wars US sales remain steady in April
First GTA title for DS, which sold less than analyst expectations, sells 74,000 in its second month
Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars sold 74,000 units in the US in April, its second month on the market, according to the NPD Group.
The sales figure, which was given to Gamasutra, is only marginally less than the 89,000 units the game sold during its debut in March.
The 89,000 units Chinatown Wars sold in April was seen as a disappointment by analysts, who originally said the game could sell as many as 2 million units in its first year.
These steady sales could indicate the longtail potential of AAA DS games that Nintendo pointed out in April. At that time, Nintendo's Steve Singer pointed out that the Nintendo DS version of Call of Duty 4, which has lifetime sales of over 500,000 units, sold only 36,000 in its first month.
"Chinatown Wars' is performing in line with AAA titles that have come to our platform like Spore or Lego Star Wars," Singer told MTV at that time. "Those games went on to have very different life-to-date sales numbers."
