Google Nexus 10 coming for $399 in November
Google announces a full lineup of Nexus devices for the holidays
Google announced a full set of devices today to complete their Nexus line-up for the holiday season. The devices include the Nexus 4 smartphone, the Nexus 10 tablet, and an updated Nexus 7 tablet. All three devices will come installed with Android 4.2, the latest version of Google's mobile operating system.
The Nexus 10 is Google's first 10-inch tablet, competing directly with Apple's best-selling iPad. The Nexus was developed by Samsung and sports a 2560x1600 resolution screen, Samsung's dual-core 2GB of RAM, a Samsung Exynos 5250 (dual-core A15 CPU and quad-core ARM Mali-T604 GPU), and 16 or 32 GB of storage. Google is quick to compare the Nexus 10 to Apple's iPad, pointing out the Retina-surpassing 300 ppi and the lighter 603g heft. Users will have to get used to Wi-Fi only, as there's currently no mobile data option planned for the tablet. The Google Nexus 10 will cost $399 for the 16 GB unit and $499 for the 32 GB unit, with a release date of November 13, 2012.
The Nexus 4 replaces the Samsung Galaxy Nexus as Google's flagship smartphone, with the Galaxy Nexus being delisted from the Google Play store. The Nexus 4 features a 4.7-inch screen with a resolution of 1280x768 powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon S4 Pro processor and 2GB of RAM. Unfortunately, the Nexus 4 won't have an LTE version, meaning North American carriers like Verizon and Sprint will miss out on the fun. Google senior vice president Andy Rubin told The Verge the decision to go with a HSPA+ phone is a "tactical" choice, allowing Google to control distribution of the hardware.
"A lot of the networks that have deployed LTE haven't scaled completely yet - they're hybrid networks [...] which means the devices need both radios built into them," Rubin told The Verge. "When we did the Galaxy Nexus with LTE we had to do just that, and it just wasn't a great user experience. Tactically, we want to make sure the devices are available for every network on the planet."
The Nexus 4 will be available in 8GB and 16GB units, for $299 and $349 respectively. Much like the Nexus 10, the Nexus 4 is scheduled for release on November 13, 2012.
Finally, the Google Nexus 7 sees the death of its entry-level 8GB unit. The 16GB version has become the new entry-level at a new, lower-price of $199. At the 16GB's old $249 price point is a brand-new 32GB Nexus 7. Google has also added a version of the Nexus 7 with mobile data. The tablet will be HSPA+ like the Nexus 4, and will set users back $299.99. The Wi-Fi only versions of the Google Nexus 7 are available immediately, while the HSPA+ version will be available on November 13.
With the Nexus 4, Nexus 7, and Nexus 10, Google is on even footing with Apple's iPhone 5, iPad mini, and iPad. Will it be enough to help Google and Android gain some ground?
