Get-Well Gamers and GameSHOUT Deliver

The Get-Well Gamers Foundation and GameSHOUT have teamed up to get more pain relief in the hands of children who are confined to hospitals. In this picture Ryan Sharpe is delivering a game system donated by GameSHOUT.

While in Los Angeles at E3 in May 2005, GameSHOUT had the opportunity to meet Ryan Sharpe, the President of The Get-Well Gamers Foundation. They are a 501®(3) charity organization that has a goal of easing the pain and suffering of children. The way they do this is through the use of old un-used video games.

Have you noticed how many dentist offices now use video games for young patients? This is because studies have shown that as the game player focuses on the video game, they are diverted from any discomfort, thus alleviating the need for as much pain medication. The same holds true for children in the hospitals across America. Several studies have shown that children who play video games recovered more quickly and required less pain medication than many of those who did not have any activity to focus their attention on.

The Get-Well Gamers Foundation is gathering old un-used console and hand-held video games from around the United States and delivering them to children's wards of hospitals all across the country. It doesn't matter what game system it is either, just as long as it works. Get-Well Gamers will clean the system up, make sure they work, place a label on the game system and deliver them to the hospitals that are currently working with them

On this day, Ryan Sharpe, President of Get-Well Gamers donned his GameSHOUT t-shirt and went to the Fountain Valley Regional Health Center in Fountain Valley California. He took with him his corporate treasurer James Jorris and a hand-held game system donated by GameSHOUT along with several games. "Johnathan has been at the Fountain Valley facility for quite some time in the oncology unit," said Sharpe. "The Child Life Director was telling us that he tends to burn through games rather quickly and grows despondent when he doesn't have anything good to play," Sharpe further stated.

GameSHOUT and its affiliate AM and FM affiliate stations will be leading up to a big drive culminating at the end of November for the holiday season. During this time, there will be some drop-off locations available across the United States for you to donate your old equipment to. But if you just can't wait and want to get involved now, please do. To do so now, go to www.get-well-gamers.org and send them your donation now.

There are millions of these old Nintendo game systems, Playstations, Sega Game Gears and more just sitting in the corner of your basement gathering dust. And with the new consoles coming out soon, that will make even more consoles available. But we are told that hand-held systems are like gold. Don't have an old game system gathering dust but you still want to help out? One of the GameSHOUT employees is calling on used video game stores and asking them for old machines and games that they can't sell.

Another very valuable way to help is by making friends with your local hospital and getting contact name and information right to Ryan Sharpe at Get-Well Gamers. They will contact them and add them to the list thus getting these tools to fight pain into the hands of needing children. It's amazing how many more hospitals are needed to get involved in this effort.

Some other major companies have shown an interest in getting more involved in this project as well. Sony Corporation and Microsoft have been contacted for their support as well. If your company can help too, please contact us at news@GameSHOUT.com. Remember that since they are a 501®(3) organization, your donations are tax deductible up to certain limits.

About The Get-Well Gamers Foundation:

The Get-Well Gamers Foundaiton is dedicated to providing hospitalized children with video games. Studies have shown that playing video games is one of the best ways for patients to dull their pain receptors and shortens the length of their hospital stays, so our goal is to make sure children at hospitals across the U.S. have videogames available to them. We provide systems, games, and handhelds to any hospital that needs them. The Get-Well Gamers Foundation was founded in the fall of 2001 and incorporated in 2003. It was conceived of when the company's founder and a few of his then-classmates were talking about what a pleasant distraction games were when one was sick, and the idea developed that someone should supply video games to hospitals that don't have any.
