GCDC 2006 Workshop "Triple Play & Games"
"New Business Models for Game Development in Europe"
GC Developer Conference (GCDC)
(21. bis 23. August 2006)
As part of the GCDC program, Europe's leading developer conference, the workshop "Triple Play & Games - New Business Models for Game Development in Europe", 22nd August, 18:15-19:15, takes a close look at the convergence of internet, telephone and television, and the resulting opportunities for game developers. From an operator's point, this development becomes a triple play due to its impact on technology, as well as on business models and media culture. Is there a world beyond the traditional console and PC markets for game developers? Can Telcos and TV networks give a valuable contribution to this? How will this influence the relationship between developers and publishers? These are only a few questions that the experts will turn to during the workshop.
The most striking new component for the old players is the enhancement of interactivity. Game developers are best at creating interactive entertainment and games. Still it is also clear that the vision for game-playing might be stretched further and beyond that envisaged by the current thinking of the games industry. In consequence, the new development opens a wide range of new constellations for game developers, offering new business models. Some of the classic "deadlocks" will be overcome, others might come along. For the time being, game developers have worked in business models such as advance against royalties or revenue share models. Will there be new models on the horizon?
The panel will consist of representatives of traditional media in transition, open to discuss with game developers the new schemes and the opportunities. Michael Bohne, who has much experience working for a big German developer/publisher and who has just started his new business around this subject, will try to explore the subject from a developer's point of view. David Wood, head of new media of the EBU, will be representing the broadcasters and Michiel Pelt will explain the new role of the manufacturers in this context. Thomas Lukowsky from Arcor will show from the other side - the telcos - how mature their ambition is to enter the world of games. Dr. Wolf Siegert, a consultant on convergence strategies for the last 15 years will finally comment the workshop's subject from an independent point of view.
The workshop will be moderated by Malte Behrmann, the political director of the national association of game developers in Germany (G.A.M.E.). It has been organized with the support of www.NEM-initiative.org.
