GC family 2007 publishes complete support programme

GC (Games Convention) 2007

(23 to 26 August 2007)

Press and professional visitors day: 22 August 2007

Leipzig, 14 August 2007

John Locke (1632 - 1704) said, that the trick is to make everything that children are to do or learn into a game.

Learning is fun! Proof of this can be found at the GC family, from 23 to 26 August. The exhibition area for child-friendly media and media skills at the GC - Games Convention (Hall 5) is providing advice on the educational potential of digital games once again this year. The support programme for the GC family 2007 is ready to go as of today. To make sure nothing is missed, visitors can participate in the "GC family Highscore" game and the family game "GC family Marathon". Six PC games islands, numerous console units and four Family-LAN stations offer opportunities to try out the latest in learning and entertainment games. In addition, the GC family stage also addresses current themes relating to infotainment and edutainment. The complete programme can be seen at www.gc-germany.com/gcfamily.

Once again, this year will see six noted GC family experts on hand to assist visitors with personal media skills. In addition, experienced GC guides will also be available every day to provide themed tours of the GC. These start at 11.00 AM, 2.00 PM and 4.00 PM, at the GC Guide Counter (Hall 5, E31).

The "Netzwerk Medienkompetenz", a bundling of exhibiting media institutions, will be providing information on how to handle modern media at its stands. Where the "Media knowledge" area deals with themes of protection of minors and the incorporation of modern media into society and the workplace, in the "Media use" area information is provided on current developments and background in the digital age.

GC family stage

This year, once again, the central meeting point is the GC family stage. A varied programme informs visitors of current themes in edutainment, offering numerous interactive events and attractive prizes to be won. The centre piece of the stage programme comprises numerous stage shows, including "Fantastic paws - the world of animal games" and "Wii, Xbox and Co. - the world of consoles".

This year sees a particular emphasis placed upon the protection of minors. Parents and teachers can obtain advice on which computer games are most suitable for which ages. Game themes such the genre-knowledge "What exactly is....?" are also covered. Three times a day games producers and experts use specific examples to explain what game genres exist, how they differ from one another and who they are most suitable for.

One highlight is the appearance of the official "Lara Croft" model, Karima Adebibe, on 23 August at 4.15 PM and on 24 August at 4.35 PM. Entertainment is also available in the guise of the multimedia show "The three ???" on 26 August at 10.30 AM. Whilst author Ulf Blanck reads extracts from his book, the audio book and a digital game will be in action at the same time.

GC family Highsore

The GC family Highscore game familiar from last year transforms the GC family hall into a gigantic games board. With the 19 participating exhibitor stands acting as the playing field with over 30 different offers, visitors assume the role of the figures. In this manner it is possible to discover the individual theme areas of "Children's & family games", "Learning & knowledge" and "Media skills & protection of minors". Attractive prizes await the best scores of the day.

GC family Marathon

New to the programme is the island game GC family Marathon, an offer directed specifically at families. On six PC islands parents and their children can test interactive learning programmes together. True to the motto "the family wins!", participating families that complete all of the stages receive a thank-you for the PC at home. In addition, a winner of the day is announced every day at 4.00 PM.

PC game islands

The six PC game islands offer GC family visitors over 50 different educational and entertainment games. Depending on interests, it is possible to choose between the games worlds of "Family games", "Kids' games", "Be creative - join in!", "Learning fever", "Clever animals" and "Savvy skills". All islands are supervised by accomplished GC guides, who are on hand to offer advice regarding both the games and other questions.

All those of an artistic nature should take part in the daily creativity contests. Amongst other activities, in the "Germany's next Top Model" game it is possible to design chic fashion outfits. The best designs will be presented daily at 5.00 PM on the GC family stage, with prizes awarded.

Family-LAN

A games experience of the special kind is possible thanks to Family-LAN". A total of 16 computers can be interlinked for the audience to play with and against one another in a network. There is a choice of 25 family-oriented games, beginning with PC versions of popular board games and moving on via racing simulators and sports games to fantasy role play. Numerous competitions offer tempting prizes for the winners. For example, each day of the fair at 11.00 AM sees the start of the "Find the treasure!" competition, with a treasure map of the "Bounty Bay Online" game developed especially for the GC family.

Note to editors: We will be happy to send you a printable version of the "GC family Highscore" game on request.
