Having returned from a three-year tenure in New York for Take-Two as chief operating officer, Gary Lewis has joined Cambridge middleware developer Geomerics as CEO.
Chris Doran, theoretical maths wizard and Geomerics founding member, moves from CEO to COO following the appointment.
The move is announced as Geomerics plans to show off its first product - a real-time radiosity solution for the current generation of console and PC hardware - at GDC in March. The developer has been eyed as one with great promise by the industry since its foundation in 2005.
"Appointing a CEO has been a major priority and we're delighted Gary has joined us," said Doran. "People of his calibre are few and far between. His vision, experience and clear thinking will be invaluable to the success of Geomerics."
Lewis added, "Geomerics is in its infancy but it's evident its skills and technology are immensely important in the development of titles for this generation of consoles. Here, I've seen the future and am very excited to be part of it."
"Geomerics has demonstrated unique capabilities which will help raise the bar and deliver a greater gaming experience for next-gen gaming," he continued.
"The company does this via a new approach to solving development problems, working and partnering with the development community, using academic expertise in the new mathematics of geometric algebra and bringing a deep understanding of the industry from both a development and publishing perspective."
Geomerics solution to computing real time radiosity is demonstrated on the company's website.
The product achieves frame rates of up to 100Hz on common graphics hardware, and allows for fully dynamic lighting, including point spot-lights, area lights, texture-based lighting, glowing objects and the projection of video onto geometry.
According to the company this morning, "The full indirect lighting calculation includes the soft-shadows that characterise real-world scenes. Geomerics' technology also integrates smoothly with classic techniques such as normal and gloss mapping, and fully supports HDR (high dynamic range) lighting effects."
Check back tomorrow for a full interview with Lewis and Doran on both the appointment and Geomerics' aspirations in the middleware space.
