French ruling can open doors for rest of Europe - EGDF

The European Games Developer Federation believes that today's ruling by the European Commission to allow tax breaks to French developers can help pave the way for similar concessions for other European countries.

The European Games Developer Federation believes that today's ruling by the European Commission to allow tax breaks to French developers can help pave the way for similar concessions for other European countries.

The EU has ruled that the French government will be able to offer cash rebates of up to 20 per cent of developments costs, providing the game fulfils cultural criteria.

"This sends a signal to the entire continent that there's an opportunity. It's great for France, but there's more to be done across Europe," said Alexander Fernandez, commercial director for the EGDF, speaking to GamesIndustry.biz

"It's an opportunity for European developers outside of France to open a constructive dialogue with their local governments.

"European development has been able to sustain itself to this point, but it does need help. Governments need to get involved to help their local development industries.

"For European developers to succeed, they need equal footing with the rest of the global industry. We need the support of our members and our governments to succeed," said Fernandez.
