Forza Motorsport 7 removes prize crates, avoids paid tokens

The growing public distaste for anything resembling loot crates continues to have its effect, even in games where those loot crates are comparably less problematic. Today, it was announced that Forza Motorsport 7 will be removing its prize crates and paid tokens, despite the former not costing real money.

In a blog post, the Forza team outlined that the reason for the crates' removal was negative feedback from the community.

"One major area of discussion for the team has been prize crates," the post reads. "While we've never charged money for prize crates in Forza Motorsport 7, their presence in the game has continued to be a source of controversy. The overwhelming feedback has been that this system feels out of place in the game."

These prize crates once contained exclusive cars and cosmetics, but until the update is pushed to remove the crates entirely later this winter, they now only contain the latter. Cars that were once only obtainable in these crates can now be unlocked through normal methods in-game.

In addition, "prize tokens" will not be added to either Forza Motorsport 7 or Forza Horizon 4. Unlike crates, prize tokens could be purchased for real money and used to buy in-game advantages such as cars, effectively offering competitive advantages to those who spent money. Though they have not been available in Motorsport 7 (and now, per the post, never will be), prize tokens had made appearances in past games.
