Florida passes bill for better game tax breaks
"Off season" tax credit to be made available, as well as one for family-friendly titles
The Florida House of Representatives has unanimously passed a bill designed to boost existing tax breaks for the entertainment industries.
The bill which, if made law, will raise tax credits from 15 per cent to 20 per cent for in-state companies, was passed with a vote of 112 to 0.
Gamasutra reports that a supplementary 5 per cent credit will also be made available to projects produced during the June to November "off-season" period, while a further 5 per cent will be made available to "family-friendly" titles.
Family-friendly is defined as a production suitable for ages 5 and upwards and not containing acts of smoking, sex, nudity, gratuitous violence or vulgar and profane language.
Discussion of the bill has largely focused on attracting the film industry to the state, however all of its core benefits will also apply to games companies.
