Electronic Arts becomes the latest to sign Unreal Engine 3 technology

Epic Games' versatile next-generation Unreal Engine 3 technology has a lot of fans, and EA is officially now one of them.

Electronic Arts has joined the ever-growing list of Unreal Engine 3 licensees, further boosting the profile of Epic Games' versatile next-generation technology.

EA studios president Paul Lee said that the licence was part of a wider strategy of delivering as many tools as possible to the publisher's teams.

"We license cutting edge tools like the Unreal Engine 3 and combine them with our own systems to create state-of-the-art development technology," he said.

With the next generation of consoles barely out of the starting gate, Unreal Engine 3 has emerged as one of the most popular and well-known technologies available to developers.

A list of recent adopters includes Microsoft, Sony and Sony Online Entertainment, Atari, Midway, THQ, Buena Vista Games, Bioware, Gearbox Software, Real Time Worlds, 10tacle Studios, TimeGate and Silicon Knights.

The engine will also form the basis of Epic Games' own Unreal Tournament 2007 and Gears of War. The latter - one of the Xbox 360's biggest prospects - is due for release on November 17 in the UK.
