EA announces first Spore title for Wii

Wii-exclusive Spore Hero is the first console entry in the franchise

Electronic Arts has announced Spore Hero, the first game in the popular Spore franchise to be released on a home console, is being developed exclusively for Nintendo's Wii.

Spore Hero is a "story-driven action-adventure." Players will be able to create their own hero to "embark on an epic quest to save their new home world from destruction as a dark force threatens the planet." The publisher also announced a follow-up to Spore Creatures on the Nintendo DS. Titled Spore Hero Arena, the game will follow a similar premise to the Wii title, though is focused on "intense arena-based combat."

"When Maxis first considered bringing Spore to console players, the Nintendo platforms jumped out as a perfect fit. Whether it is the stylus-driven action of the Nintendo DS or playful controllers of the Wii, the massive Nintendo audience is the ideal home for Spore Hero and Spore Hero Arena," said Spore developer Maxis VP and general manager Lucy Bradshaw.

"Nintendo fans will love the humor, ability to create their own Hero, fun gameplay and immersive storylines we're creating for these two games."

EA recently announced that the Spore franchise sold 2 million units in the fiscal year ending March 31. The franchise has seen entries on the PC, Macintosh, Nintendo DS and mobile phones.
