Drifter lands $2.25 million in funding
Signia Venture Partners leads seed round for upstart VR eSports studio
By setting itself up specifically to work on VR eSports games, Drifter Entertainment is banking heavily on the growth and intersection of two still unproven fields. The studio has found a few parties also willing to bank on it, as Drifter today announced the raising of $2.25 million in seed funding.
The funding was led by venture capitalist firm Signia Venture Partners, whose previous gaming bets include Super Evil Mega Corp. and Phoenix Labs. In conjunction with the investment, Signia will be installing partner Sunny Dhillon on Drifter's board of directors. Initialized Capital is also participating in the funding round.
Drifter announced its formation in October, boasting the previous experience of founding team Ray Davis, Kenneth Scott, and Brian Murphy. Davis was GM for Unreal Engine 4 and a CTO on Microsoft's HoloLens, while Murphy was a designer and creative director on HoloLens, Xbox One, and Kinect. Previously, Scott led a development team at Oculus, and has a lengthy history as an art lead in AAA development on games like Halo 4 and Doom 3.
"You rarely come across a founder like Ray with the technical and creative chops found in very few gaming company founders," Dhillon said. "We're excited to build market defining virtual reality games with Team Drifter."
