Discord triples users to 130 million in one year
The gaming chat platform just closed a $50 million round, which valued the company at $1.65 billion
Discord now has 130 million registered users, having tripled the size of its audience in the space of a single year.
The gaming chat platform has 45 million users in May 2017, and that increased to 90 million by the end of the year. According to the latest figures, which were released to mark the San Francisco-based company's third anniversary, that number now stands at more than 130 million.
Discord has 19 million DAUs - up from 9 million in May 2017 - and its peak for concurrent users is 8.2 million. More than 750 games have verified servers on the platform, including market-leading games like Fortnite and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds.
Last month, CEO Jason Citron confirmed to the Wall Street Journal that the company had raised an additional $50 million in funding from its existing investors. The deal valued Discord at $1.65 billion. The company closed a funding round apparently worth $50 million in January 2017. At that point, it was only valued at $725 million. When we talked to Citron at GDC, he was bullish about the potential for Discord to keep growing at a rapid pace. "We really feel that growth is a result of people loving the product, so we continue to refine and improve," he said. "There's a lot of people who play games, so I think we have a lot more headroom. More people who play games don't know what Discord is than do. So I think it's still early days for us." You can read the full interview with Citron here.
