Codemasters has revealed that the recently released Colin McRae: DIRT sold 500,000 copies worldwide in its first week of release.

The title has also racked up over 500,000 downloads of the PC and Xbox 360 demo

"This success with DIRT is a text-book case of our product development, marketing and distribution efforts all working together to ignite consumer interest and drive sales," said Rod Cousens, CEO of Codemasters.

"Nearly half of our first week's sales are from the US alone, which means momentum behind this series is taking hold in new territories."

The game entered the UK all-formats charts at number four on it's first weekend of sales, and is currently sandwiched between fellow racers Flat Out: Ultimate Carnage and number one seller Forza Motorsport 2 in the Xbox 360 charts.
