Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon creative director announces departure from Ubisoft

Dean Evans leaves French publisher after 12 years, considers opening own studio

The creative director behind Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, Dean Evans, has announced his departure from Ubisoft after 12 years with the publisher.

Evans, also known for his work on Splinter Cell and Assassin's Creed, made the decision after an unannounced project he was working on got shelved.

He was then offered a new role joining the editorial leadership group in Paris, headed by creative officer Serge Hascoet, but decided instead to move on to new ventures.

Speaking in an interview with Game Informer, Evans said: "I split with my wife, and then the project I was working on was cancelled. All of this massive shit going on at the same time and I started thinking, 'Is the best option for me to move to another foreign country?'

"I'm 40 this year, and it's so fucking cliche, but you do think about it in the same way you do when you turn 30. These milestones, you start thinking about what you really want to be doing and whether you're making the right decision."

Evans says he left on good terms with Ubisoft and will now return to the UK where he will take some time off to travel. He has not announced any concrete plans for his return to the industry, but suggested starting his own studio.

"A lot of people have been complaining about the AAA business and the lack of risk taking, that I'd be a total fucking hypocrite if I moved forward and didn't take any risks," he said. "So fuck it, I think I might go out and set up my own studio and see where that goes."
