COVID-19: BlizzCon 2020 cancelled

Blizzard hints at digital event early next year

Blizzard Entertainment has cancelled its annual gaming convention BlizzCon 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We're feeling deeply disappointed about this decision, and imagine many of you will feel the same," said BlizzCon executive producer Saralyn Smith in a blog post.

"I truly love BlizzCon, and I know that's a sentiment shared by everyone at Blizzard. We will sorely miss connecting with so many of you at the convention and 'recharging our geek batteries' this fall."

The announcement comes over a month after Blizzard said it was still too early to make a decision on whether the event would take place in the autumn.

However, with no end in sight to the pandemic, Blizzard ultimately decided to push this year's event into 2021, and is also considering digital options.

Additionally, as BlizzCon is a major calendar event for Blizzard esports, the company is investigating alternatives to support professional level competition.
