Coffee Stain Studios becomes a publisher
First project for Goat Simulator team is arcade shooter Huntdown
Coffee Stain, the Swedish team which developed surprise smash hit Goat Simulator, is becoming a publisher, GamesIndustry.biz can exclusively reveal.
The small studio, based in the university town of Skovde, says the move was prompted by years of dealing with publishers who were unable or unwilling to meet the needs of indie developers.
"After years of developing games and working with different publishers that did or didn't walk the talk, Coffee Stain figured out how to self-publish with great results," said a company spokesperson. "Now, with chests bulging of goat coin, Coffee Stain opens an initiative towards what the company considers "good publishing'."
Coffee Stain's Sebastian Badylak had this to add:
"Just as everyone else we want to re-define game publishing, in our case by acting more as a partner for developers, than as a traditional publisher. Our goal is to push projects towards success under balanced and fair conditions. We will offer the deals that we would love to have signed ourselves as developers."
The first game to see release under the Coffee Stain label will be Huntdown, an '80s style side-scrolling arcade shooter set in a dystopian future developed by Swedish team Easy Trigger. Coffee Stain CEO Anton Westbergh says the game is a sign of things to come.
"Coffee Stain Publishing will start small, by signing only a few select projects," Westbergh told GamesIndustry.biz. "This is to ensure that we can maintain high focus while also allowing ourselves to enjoy the fun in game development together with our developers. I am thrilled about all this!"
