CESA jubilant as TGS figures show growth

Event organiser CESA has released preliminary attendance figures for the Tokyo Games Show, revealing a substantial climb in attendance at the three day event and reversing several years of decline for the show.

Early figures for the three day event show 158,089 visitors passing through the show's turnstiles, compared with 134,042 last year - a climb which CESA attributes largely to a boost in the number of corporate visitors to the show.

TGS this year featured the unveiling of a wide range of new games, with the show indisputably stolen by Square Enix - whose first TGS as a merged company yielded a stand hosting not only updates to the hugely successful Kingdom Hearts franchise on GBA and PS2, but also news of the company's CG movie based on Final Fantasy VII.

Next year's event is scheduled for September 24-26, 2004, and may well be the first public show to feature PlayStation Portable software in playable form. Although the hardware of the PSP is expected to make an appearance at E3 in May 2004, Sony has hinted strongly that playable software may not be ready until TGS.
