CD Projekt's 2020 sales trounce previous full-year record
Cyberpunk 2077 developer's preliminary financials show 2020 sales and profits both several times higher than records set during The Witcher 3's launch year
CD Projekt today announced two preliminary numbers from its upcoming annual earnings report to give an idea of just how big its 2020 and the December debut of Cyberpunk 2077 really were.
For the full year, CD Projekt brought in a record PLN 2.14 billion ($562 million) in consolidated sales revenues. That number is more than four times what it reported for 2019, and more than two-and-a-half times the company's previous record of PLN 798 million ($210 million), set in 2015 with the launch of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
The company set a bottom-line record as well, reporting a net profit of PLN 1.15 billion ($303 million). That more than triples the company's previous profit record of PLN 342 million ($89.8 million), also set in 2015.
The gap between the company's two best years looks even wider considering The Witcher 3 launched in May of 2015 and had months to continue selling, while Cyberpunk 2077 hit shelves on December 10. (Cyberpunk 2077 also had garnered 8 million preorders over the years leading up to its release.)
Sales aside, it would be difficult to call the launch of Cyberpunk 2077 an unqualified success. The game debuted in such a rough state, particularly on consoles, that the developer promised refunds to any customer who wanted one, and Sony removed the digital copy of the game from the PlayStation Store entirely. As of this writing, Sony has not put it back on sale.
CD Projekt expects to announce its final results for last year on April 22.
