Carolina Games Summit
Time Warner initiative set to sponsor industry event.
Connect a Million Minds is Time Warner Cable’s five-year, $100 million philanthropic initiative designed to engage and inspire young people tobecome the problem solvers of tomorrow by pursuing education and career paths in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
“CAMM seeks opportunities outside of the classroom to expose students to the vast options there are to apply STEM to real-life learning activities and careers,” said Keith Poston, Director of Communications for Time Warner Cable’s Raleigh/Coastal/Fayetteville area. ““The Carolina Games Summit is a perfect fit because leading game developers are offering hands-on clinics on the technology behind the gaming industry making it accessible to students.” “Event goers can attend educational sessions from industry speakers, interact with exhibitors demonstrating their latest products and software, and test their gaming skills in a variety of competitive video game tournaments, said Tracy Schmeltzer the Carolina Games Summit's Producer."Visitors can experience presentations from industry visionaries, plan for a future in the game development field, and enjoy fiercely competitive tournaments all at one event."
Events like the Carolina Games Summit can be a fun way to underscore the importance of STEM related education and career pathways. According to the NC STEM Community Collaborative, only one out of three eighth graders is proficient in math and only one out of five eighth graders is proficient in science. Yet, 80 percent of jobs in the next decade will require STEM skills.
The Carolina Games Summit brings nationally-known gaming luminaries from game developers such as Icarus Studios, Virtual Heroes, and RedStorm Entertainment along with representatives from local colleges and schools who feature simulation and game development programs. These tangible examples of gaming professionals and education options enable students to learn how to pursue careers in the gaming industry.
In addition, current and past students will be able to demonstrate their game projects in the Student Showcase room.
