Carmack to receive Lifetime Achievement Award
id Software founder to be honoured at Game Developers Choice Awards
John Carmack is to be honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at this year's Game Developers Choice Awards, it has been announced.
The co-founder of id Software, who played a critical role in the development of real-time 3D game graphics, follows in the footsteps of other Lifetime Achievement Award recipients Sid Meier, Shigeru Miyomoto and Will Wright.
The latter will present the award to Carmack at a ceremony to be held on March 11, during the Game Developers Conference 2010 in San Francisco, which will be hosted by Warren Spector.
"It's no exaggeration to say that John Carmack and id Software have had a monumental influence on all modern 3D games, but especially the first-person shooter genre," said Meggan Scavio, event director of GDC.
"John is one of the key figures in the history of videogames, and we're delighted to be giving him the Lifetime Achievement award this year.”
Carmack was selected for the award by the Choice Awards Advisory Committee, which includes industry members such as Ben Cousins, Ray Muzyka and Clint Hocking.
