Caravel Games Gives Away Their Job to Fans
For Immediate Release
May 5th 2006- Caravel Games, creator of the
critically acclaimed and award-winning DROD series (www.caravelgames.com), is ambiguously happy and
confused. By offering their game with a powerful in-game
editor and online features for developing and publishing
levels, the Caravel team has found themselves no longer the
primary source of new content in their own game, although
they are still as active in development as ever.
"It's strange," said Erik Hermansen, founder of Caravel
Games. "For our expansion packs, we mainly just improve the
polish on what other people have done. We take the
player-submitted content very seriously, and add voice acting
and stories to what they do. But players are doing the hard
work of designing new levels."
Earlier in the year, the count of user-created levels for the
DROD series passed 8,000. This user-created content is
available as a perk of being a subscriber to the
Smitemaster's Selection. Four times a year the newest and
best user-created content is packed up into a CD, complete
with crazy bonus content, and shipped right to your door.
Bonus content includes audio drama, music from the game, and
plenty of dungeon-exterminating fun.
The DROD series is famed as the Players Choice of best game
of 2005 from Game Tunnel, as well as being one of the Top
Shareware Games of 2005 according to Adrenaline Vault. More
information on this highly moddable, open source game can be
found at the Caravel Games website, www.caravelgames.com. All Caravel Games come with
a free demo to discover what has turned a small puzzle game
into an 8,000-level-long adventure.
