Capcom profits tank 90%

Lost Planet 2 and other console games fail to do the business for publisher

Capcom's profits for the June quarter were down a massive 90 per cent, from ¥2.2 billion ($25.3 million) to ¥213 million ($2.4 million), due to poor console games sales including those of Lost Planet 2.

The company also blamed the appreciation of the yen and stagnating US and European markets, along with "sluggish" sales of Monster Hunter Tri for the Wii and Ghost Trick for DS.

Net sales were ¥19 billion ($218.9 million) with operating profits of ¥1 billion ($11.5 million) – down 72.6 per cent. Monster Hunter Online for PC and Xbox 360 and Super Street Fighter IV showed steady growth, said Capcom.

The publisher has seen modest success in the mobile market, with Resident Evil 4 iPad Edition and Street Fighter IV and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney for the iPhone and iPod Touch. With few new arcade machines, sales in that market were also slow.
