Capcom announces live-action Mega Man movie
Japanese publisher working with Planet of the Apes production company Chernin Entertainment
Capcom has today announced it is working on a live-action adaptation of Mega Man, in partnership with Planet of the Apes production company Chernin Entertainment.
Scheduled for distribution by 20th Century Fox, the movie will be produced by Masi Oka of Heroes fame, with the duo behind 2010's Catfish, Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, writing and directing.
It will join the ever-expanding collection of Mega Man spin-offs from merchandise and comics, through to the Mega Man: Fully Charged animated series which began airing in August this year.
Since debuting in 1987 on the NES, the Mega Man franchise has sold more than 32 million units across its lifetime.
The announcement is part of a growing trend of video game adaptations for older game franchises, with both Sonic the Hedgehog and Super Mario also set to receive the Hollywood treatment.
"Based on the influential and globally beloved Mega Man franchise, Capcom aims to appeal to a diverse audience, including not only game players but action movie fans as well, with an adaptation that maintains the world of the Mega Man games, while incorporating the grand production and entertainment value that Hollywood movies are known for," said Capcom in a statement.
