Blizzard prepares internet stream for BlizzCon
Internet and DirectTV streams planned as tickets go on sale May 16
World of WarCraft developer Blizzard has announced that live coverage of the BlizzCon games convention will be available as an internet stream for the first time, as well as a DirecTV pay per view event.
DirecTV coverage was offered for the first time last year and will cost USD 39.95 (EUR 30) for this year’s event, for a minimum of eight hours of live HD coverage. For the first time the same content will also be available for the same price (depending on region) as an internet stream.
Viewers of either stream will also receive an exclusive, but as yet unrevealed, in-game item. A special introductory offer will also be made offering both streams and the in-game item for the price of new membership to DirecTV.
The convention is due to take place in Anaheim, California on August 21 and 22, with last year’s event attracting around 15,000 visitors. Tickets are priced at USD 125 (EUR 94) and will go on sale from May 16.
After problems last year coping with demand for tickets, a second block will go on sale on May 30. A new first come, first served queue system has also been implemented at the Blizzard Store, as well as a fixed time limit for completing purchases.
As usual the convention will include discussion panels, hands-on playtime with upcoming games, tournaments, contests and other fan events. The convention is also regularly used to make new product announcements, as well as offering beta keys for upcoming titles.
The focus of this year’s event has not been confirmed but is likely to include StarCraft II and Diablo III. Considerable fan speculation has also revolved around the likelihood of Blizzard revealing one or more previously unannounced titles.
