Atkinson's successor has "no preconceptions" on age ratings

Australia's Rau says he is currently neutral on issue of 18 rating for games

New South Australian attorney-general John Rau has said that he's currently neutral on the issue of an 18 age rating for games in the country.

According to the government official, who took over from notorious anti-gaming minister Michael Atikinson when he quit the front bench last month, he is not currently aware of all of the issues surrounding the introduction of the higher age certificate.

Speaking to GameSpot AU, Rau said that he had "no preconceptions about this issue and intend[s] to listen to the arguments."

"I can neither support nor wisely argue against a position if I am not aware of the relevant factors," he added.

"It is worth noting that ultimately, the decision does not rest with me alone," he continued. "Any change would require the support of each jurisdiction's attorney-general."

The Australian government has just completed a public consultation phase regarding the introduction of an 18 rating for games, which would bring games in line with films.

Last month, over 55,000 submissions in favour of the rating had been received.
