PopCap Launches Free Web Version of Peggle™ Game
Free Web Version of Acclaimed Casual Game Offers New Levels, Challenges and High Replayability
SEATTLE, Washington - September 5, 2007 - PopCap Games, the leading developer and publisher of casual games, today introduced a free online version of Peggle, its hugely successful puzzle game. Since launching as a fully downloadable deluxe game in March of this year, Peggle has been downloaded more than five million times and is the second fastest-selling title in the company's history. The new Web version launching today can be played for free on PopCap's own Web site and MSN's Game Zone with other portal partners adding the game soon. Consumers who enjoy the free Web version of Peggle are encouraged to download the full deluxe version and play its free trial; they can then instantly purchase and unlock the full Peggle Deluxe via credit card or PayPal for US$19.95.
"This free online version of Peggle is a great new way for anyone to get their Peggle fix," explained Sukhbir Sidhu, producer for Peggle. "With nearly random placement of the pegs on each level of the game, and the large number of level layouts, the 20 newly-created levels and five challenges in the basic version can be played hundreds, even thousands of times without becoming repetitive."
The full deluxe version of Peggle has received tremendous critical acclaim since its introduction six months ago. Most recently, MSNBC.com featured Peggle among the "Five Most Addictive Video Games of All Time." The free Web version of Peggle pits players against themselves to best their own cumulative high score over the course of ten randomly selected levels (out of 20 all-new levels). Players can unlock one extra character/power-up and five special Challenge mode levels, each of which is a variant of the basic game rules. In addition to tracking which levels have been unlocked and which challenges have been won, the online version of the game also saves a player's highest cumulative score across one ten-level set.
Peggle requires players to fire a metallic silver ball from the top of the screen, relying on gravity to propel the ball downwards while it ricochets off orange and blue "pegs." The goal is to clear all the orange pegs from the screen before running out of balls. A moving bucket at the bottom of the screen offers free balls, while hitting green power-up pegs will activate the selected character's magic power. The Web version features two of the ten characters/power-ups from Peggle Deluxe -- the "super guide" from Bjorn Unicorn, and the "pyramid power" from Kat Tut.
