Borderlands 3 cross-play is on the way, but PlayStation is not included

Randy Pitchford tweeted that Sony consoles are excluded from the update

Cross platform play is on the way to Borderlands 3, but it won't be coming to PlayStation.

That's according to Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, who took to Twitter on Tuesday to say that crossplay functionality is coming, but the developer has been told to remove crossplay for PlayStation by Borderlands publisher, 2K.

"Good news: An update for Borderlands 3 has been prepared for release that includes full crossplay support across all platforms," Pitchford wrote.

"Bad news: For certification, we have been required by the publisher to remove crossplay support for PlayStation consoles."

Earlier this month, documents used as part of the Epic vs Apple antitrust trial revealed that Sony charges developers to enable cross-platform play.

As part of his testimony, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney confirmed that Sony is the only platform holder to do this, and stated that Epic had to pay to enable crossplay for Fortnite on PlayStation.

GamesIndustry.biz has reached out to 2K for comment.
