Medal.tv raises $9 million in new funding

Horizons Ventures led the round, which takes social video platform to $12.5m lifetime funding

The game-focused video service Medal.tv has raised $9 million in new funding, in a round led by Horizons Ventures.

The round also included contributions from angels and existing investors like Maker's Fund, Techcrunch reports. Medal.tv raised $3.5 million in February this year, and now draws "hundreds of thousands" of users each day.

Video platforms are nothing new in video games, but Medal.tv is distinct from live streaming platforms in that it focuses on users sharing clips of their game experiences across a social network.

"At Medal, we believe the next big social platform will emerge in gaming, perhaps built on top of short-form content, partially as a result of gaming publishers trying to build their own isolated gaming stores and systems," said company CEO Pim de Witte in a statement.

"That drives social fragmentation in the market and brings out the need for platforms such as Medal and Discord, which unite gamers across games and platforms in a meaningful way."

Medal.tv has five million registered users.
