Winner of the Fortnite World Cup took home $3m

Kyle Giersdorf, 16, won the solo competition, winners of the duos tournament received 1.5m each

Kyle Giersdorf won the solo tournament at the Fortnite World Cup, taking home the $3 million prize.

The duos tournament was won by Emil "Nyhrox" Bergquist Pedersen and David "aqua" Wang, who won $1.5 million each. Kyle "Bugha" Giersdorf, who is 16 years-old, was the single biggest winner at the Fortnite World Cup.

The Fortnite World Cup's $3 million solo prize is just above the amount awarded to the winner of the men's competition at Wimbledon.

"Emotionally, right now, I don't feel too much, except I know that this could pretty much change my life forever," Giersdorf said, as reported by ESPN. "It's just absolutely unreal."

The total prize-pool for the Fortnite World Cup was $30 million, with every competitor taking home a minimum of $50,000. The event was held at the Arthur Ashe stadium in New York City, which has a capacity of more than 23,000.

Epic Games committed to investing $100 million in prize money for Fortnite esports events in the 2018/19 season. The World Cup accounted for almost a third of that amount.
