Animal Crossing: New Leaf becomes best-selling title in the franchise
Sales finally surpass those of Wild World at nearly 12 million units
Neighborly animal whimsy remains one of Nintendo's most popular ideas, whether thanks to or in spite of mobile overtures for the series. Animal Crossing: New Leaf has, per Nintendo's Q1 financial report, surpassed its predecessor Wild World in sales to be the best-selling title in the franchise.
As of June 30, New Leaf had sold 11.78 million units, surpassing the 11.75 million total units sold for Animal Crossing: Wild World on the Nintendo DS. This includes both original sales of New Leaf and the updated version launched in 2016 and packaged as Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Welcome amiibo.
New Leaf is also the 7th best-selling Nintendo 3DS title, coming in behind Super Mario 3D Land's 12.12 million units and ahead of Super Smash Bros. for 3DS' 9.3 million. The best-selling title on the system remains Mario Kart 7, at 17.21 million units.
