Research reveals most popular esports on Twitch

Nearly three times as many MOBA streamers than any other genre

With the inclusion of esports in the 2024 Olympics still in doubt, EsportsBets has conducted research into the potential loss of viewership by not hosting a tournament.

It identified the 20 most popular esports games and ranked them by the average number of Twitch streamers.

MOBAs were by far the most popular by far with a total 241,930 active streaming accounts on the platform.

League of Legends was the clear front-runner having twice the number of active streamers than any other game with 117,855. Dota 2 meanwhile was a distant second with 52,522 active accounts.

First-person shooters were the second most popular on the platform with 82,813 streamers. PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds was the third most popular game overall with only 52,053 active accounts.

"While Counter-Strike and Overwatch may have less Twitch streamers overall, they do have more pro players among their rankings, demonstrating the higher level of engagement an FPS streamer can hope to achieve," said EsportsBets.

Sports games were the third most popular genre with a total of 11,628 Twitch streamers, beating out both fighting and real-time strategy games and with 7,657 and 7,261 accounts respectively. However, sports games are the most streamed and watched genre in the UK.

It is worth noting that Fortnite was not included in the data as it has yet to be debuted at a major esports tournament.
